Summary

The Director of Applications Development will spearhead, oversee, and assist in managing and optimizing the development and engineering practices in a fast-paced agile environment. This role is also responsible for collaborating with the respective business stakeholders, software teams, and vendors in ensuring a well-defined technology roadmap, user stories and prioritized product backlogs.

Key Responsibilities

  • Build and lead a high-performance team; hires and retains high-caliber talent in clearly defined roles; sets goals, grow and mentor, delegates work, holds direct reports accountable; develops and empowers direct reports to make decisions and take action
  • Oversee end-to-end software engineering; including web, mobile, backend, application programming interface (API), database, and systems development
  • Support the overall business strategy while ensuring best practices for Applications Development are followed
  • Review and participate in key architecture and technical design decisions
  • Assist in the definition and/or delivery of technology roadmaps, products, delivery, release schedules, estimation, documentation, forecasting, and status reports.
  • Continuously improve architecture, process, and tooling to allow for greater engineering throughput and efficiency for the engineering team
  • Assist in identifying needs for new hardware, tools, languages, frameworks, systems, or software which would improve business effectiveness or continuity
  • Investigate new or emerging technologies which would benefit the company as well as opportunities in which to implement them
  • Take full responsibility of the software development lifecycle and own the outcomes of engineering, planning, execution, and delivery of complex projects
  • Support and troubleshoot business and production issues; devise and enact effective solutions to problems with incomplete information
  • Measure team and organizational progress/health by providing metrics and deliverables
  • Act as a technical resource to other peers and departments for projects, issues, or estimation
  • Other duties as assigned by management

Minimum Experience, Education and Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or equivalent work experience
  • 10+ years of IT/Software development experience
  • 5+ years of hands on technical leadership
  • 5+ years of Agile/Scrum experience
  • 5+ years of experience developing data-driven applications using relational and non-relational database engineers as part of the overall application architecture (experience with any or all of the following is highly desirable: MariaDB, PostgreSQL, MySQL, SQL Server, MongoDB, NoSQL)
  • Experience with pub-sub, message bus, or messaging frameworks in event driven systems
  • Experience with middleware and system integration methods
  • Experience with PHP, Javascript, Node.js, and Java
  • Experience with REST API development, deployment, security, and maintenance
  • Experience with JSON, XML, AJAX, and jQuery
  • Experience with Microservice/Service Oriented Architectures
  • Experience working with or developing CRM's, ERPs, or other complex enterprise applications

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Strong understanding of architectural patterns and best practices for building highly stable and performant systems/software
  • Understanding of cloud development and tooling (AWS, Azure, etc.)
  • Understanding of DevOps concepts such as containerization (Docker, Kubernetes, etc.) and continuous integration/deployment practices (build pipelines, ansible, etc.)
  • Ability to set department and company-wide policies and procedures in respect to system integrity, performance, and security
  • Ability to set department best practices, standards, and policies and evaluate them regularly
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to clearly present ideas to a wide variety of audiences
  • Possess strong interpersonal skills, including team and partnership building
  • Must be a self-starter, proactive, assertive and able to express ideas in a variety of atmospheres
  • Demonstrate proficiency in translating high level requirements into functional and technical specifications
  • Able to work in a fast paced, multi-project environment
  • Must possess strong analytical and technical skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively with other departments and peers of varying technical understanding
  • Travel is primarily local during the business day, although some out-of-area and overnight travel may be expected
